Recovery after heart surgery: hospital, home and travel
Plan for leaving hospital, daily life, rehabilitation and the journey home.
At a glance
Heart-surgery recovery has several milestones: leaving hospital, managing daily activities and rebuilding fitness. Smaller access can reduce the early burden for some operations, but a short stay is not the same as full recovery.
CABG: about 1 week in hospital
NHS guidance describes about six weeks to most usual activities and two to three months to full recovery.

TAVI: usually 2–3 hospital days
Surgical valve replacement usually involves about a week in hospital and two to three months to full recovery.

Early walking is not full recovery
Mobilisation starts early with nursing and physiotherapy support; rehabilitation and healing continue after discharge.

Benefits and trade-offs
Potential advantages
- Rehabilitation, progressive activity and medication follow-up support the transition from hospital care to everyday life.

Trade-offs and limits
- Timing varies with the operation and health. A patient walking far soon after surgery does not establish a typical outcome or flight-clearance date.

Breastbone healing and small-incision recovery
Sternotomy divides the breastbone; recovery includes time for the bone to knit together and movement advice to protect it. Guy’s and St Thomas’ describes about three months for complete healing.
An operation through the ribs can preserve the sternum, removing that bone-healing step. Mayo Clinic identifies less pain and quicker recovery as common advantages of minimally invasive heart surgery. Incision healing, the heart procedure and overall fitness still guide the return to daily activity.

Recovery timeline after CABG, valve replacement and TAVI
These figures are broad NHS patient guidance. They are not a personal prediction, a guaranteed hospital stay or clearance to travel.
| Procedure | Hospital stay | Later recovery |
|---|---|---|
| CABG | About 1 week | Most usual activities around 6 weeks; full recovery about 2–3 months |
| Surgical valve replacement | About 1 week | Full recovery about 2–3 months |
| TAVI | Usually 2–3 days | Individual activity and follow-up plan; discharge is not full recovery |

Hospital discharge, daily activity, rehabilitation and travel
A hospital stay, independent walking and return to work describe different stages. Discharge can occur well before strength and endurance return.
- In hospital: monitoring, pain control and supported early movement.
- At home: progressively managing walking, stairs and everyday tasks.
- Rehabilitation: rebuilding activity within the operation-specific precautions.
- Return travel: a separate assessment from hospital discharge.

A smaller incision can improve one milestone without changing all of them
In the 330-patient UK Mini Mitral trial, median stay was five days after minithoracotomy versus six after sternotomy. The primary physical-function measure at 12 weeks was not superior.
These findings apply to degenerative mitral repair by expert teams. They do not predict recovery after every robotic, valve or HCM operation.

What to arrange before leaving hospital
- Operation and discharge summaries, including any implant details.
- A medication list, monitoring instructions and an anticoagulation plan if needed.
- Wound-care instructions and symptoms that require urgent help.
- Rehabilitation and activity guidance appropriate to your operation.
- Dates and responsibility for follow-up appointments and tests.
- Contact information for both the surgical team and your local clinician.

Flying and follow-up after heart surgery abroad
Travel readiness depends on the postoperative course and applicable airline requirements. Medication supply, luggage assistance and access to help at home remain practical parts of recovery.
A mechanical valve requires continuing anticoagulation monitoring. HCM surgery and other operations have their own imaging, rhythm and rehabilitation follow-up.
