HCM surgery for elongated mitral leaflets and papillary abnormalities · New York, United States

At a glance

Daniel Swistel directs HCM surgery at NYU Langone. His published resect–plicate–release approach combines septal muscle removal with selected leaflet shortening and release of abnormal papillary attachments.

Three anatomical targets

Resection treats septal muscle; plication shortens selected elongated anterior leaflets; release addresses selected papillary attachments.

Procedures varied by anatomy

In the 77-patient 2006–2012 study, 50 received leaflet plication and 50 papillary release; not everyone required all components.

Anatomy documented before and after surgery

A 2015 retrospective study included 77 myectomy patients: 50 had leaflet plication and 50 had papillary-muscle release. Echocardiographic follow-up averaged 9.5 months, with wide variation.

How to interpret this: The operations were performed in 2006–2012 at Mount Sinai/St. Luke’s–Roosevelt. They are historical team results associated with Swistel’s work, not current NYU case volume or a randomized comparison.

NYU’s HCM programme combines medical treatment, imaging and surgery. Swistel’s work addresses elongated leaflets and papillary attachments; Scheinerman is named in the hospital’s first reported robotic trans-mitral myectomy. The valve service also includes Kodali’s transcatheter expertise.
