At a glance
Columbia’s congenital service treats ASD and VSD alongside complex neonatal disease, congenital valve abnormalities and single-ventricle pathways. Childhood care connects to adult congenital assessment within the programme.
Broad defect-specific scope
The official service lists ASD/VSD repair, arterial switch, Fallot repair and Norwood/Glenn/Fontan pathways.
The robotic series is early and uncontrolled, with reported complications including effusions and pericarditis. It does not establish that robotic repair is preferable or suitable for the programme’s complex neonatal operations.
Emile Bacha’s Columbia practice spans congenital cardiac surgery in children and adults. The programme includes septal-defect repair, valve reconstruction, neonatal operations and staged single-ventricle pathways.
Bacha coauthored a programme report of 26 selected children and adults treated during 2023–2025, most with ASD or anomalous pulmonary venous return. It reports early feasibility, with pleural effusions and pericarditis among complications.
How to interpret this: Uncontrolled early experience, not proof that robotic repair is better. Coauthorship does not establish who operated on each patient.
