Operations and experience

Bookimed reports 23 years of experience, and its bypass-package description says he has performed more than 900 weight-loss surgeries. These are unaudited page claims; the operation count has no reporting date and is not a study result. ^[5]

Early complications after sleeve gastrectomy

Yardimci is the last author of a study of 1,356 sleeve-gastrectomy patients treated during 2020–2023. The study reported bleeding in 1.0%, a leak in 0.2%, and reoperation in 0.6%. The paper lists his affiliation at Istinye University’s VM Medical Park Pendik Hospital, not his current Acibadem hospital. These are study-group rates; the publication does not provide an audited surgeon-specific complication rate. ^[6]

The study compared adding fixation of nearby fatty tissue to the stomach with not adding it, after the staple line had already been reinforced with stitches. It found no additional benefit for early complications. What this means for you: an extra surgical step is not automatically safer. This was a single-centre retrospective comparison, and its rates cannot predict your individual risk or establish the safety of gastric bypass. ^[7]

Planning for a technically difficult sleeve operation

A separate paper with Yardimci as last author examined 151 sleeve-gastrectomy patients from May–October 2022. The surgeon rated 123 operations easy, 22 intermediate and 6 difficult. There were no leaks among the 151 patients, but 2 patients had bleeding; one required another laparoscopy. The paper reported no deaths or readmissions within 30 days. ^[8]

What this means for you: preoperative assessment can help the team prepare for technical difficulty, but this small study does not show that surgery is risk-free. Difficulty was judged by the operating surgeon. This group came from the same hospital and an overlapping period as the larger study, so the patient numbers should not be added together. ^{[9] [10]}

Check the overnight plan before buying flights: the sleeve descriptions say 3 hospital nights and 2 hotel nights, while the duration boxes use days. Ask for arrival and discharge dates and the exact hotel entitlement for the package you choose, rather than treating days as nights. ^{[19] [20]}
